Summary : Formal gardens and pleasure grounds to Elvaston Castle laid out by William Barrow between 1830-51 for the fourth Earl of Harrington. Some of his designs were based on 17th century gardens designed by Daniel Marot. The gardens were laid out using mature trees transplanted by methods pioneered by William McNab of the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and further developed by Barrow. The gardens were opened to the public in 1851 following the Earl's death. The Parterre Garden was laid out in 1970. |
