Monument Number 56882

Hob Uid: 56882
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Byland with Wass
Grid Ref : SE5577178620
Summary : A licence to make a deer park was granted to the abbot of Byland Abbey in 1380. The park is not mentioned in Dissolution documents, and was therefore probably already out of use by 1538. 18th-century fieldname evidence suggests the park lay immediately east of, and partly overlapped with, the precinct. A short length of the park pale may survive as an earthwork (UID 1539240) in the west.
More information : SE 54 78. Licence to inclose a park was obtained by the abbot of Byland in 1380. The park itself has disappeared. (1)

The abbot was granted licence to empark 100 acres in 1380 (2a). A block of 'Lawn' and 'Park' fieldnames which appear on an estate map dating to c 1730 (2b) suggest the park was centred at c SE 5577 7862 immediately east of, and partly overlapping with, the abbey precinct. However, the named fields cover only c 80 acres and it is unclear whether the 100 acres of the licence is an approximation or whether additional lands lacking diagnostic later fieldnames were also included within it. Since the park is not mentioned at the Dissolution in 1538, it may already have ceased to exist by that date. A length of deep ditch at SE 5518 7894 (SE 57 NE 139) may represent part of the park pale (2c). (2)
