Summary : A group of three Bronze Age barrows survive as earthworks on Normanton Down. They form the western group of the Normanton Down round barrow cemetery (Monument Number 1531088), which continues to the east (Monument Number 219537). The group comprises two bowl barrows and a disc barrow, listed as Wilsford (South) 2, 2a & 2b by Goddard (1913) and subsequently by Grinsell (1957). All three were excavated by Colt Hoare in the early 19th century. Please see individual barrow records for specific details about each. |

Two bowl barrows and one disc barrow (Wilsford 2, 2a and 2b) which may form part of the Normanton Down Barrow Group (SU 14 SW 39). All three were excavated by Colt Hoare who located burials accompanied by grave goods in Wilsford 2a (SU 14 SW 435) and Wilsford 2b (SU 14 SW 436). The other barrow Wilsford 2 (SU 14 SW 434) had been opened previously. (2-3)
Wilford 2 (SU 14 SW 434) and Wilsford 2a (SU 14 SW 435) are still visible. There is no trace of Wilsford 2b (SU 14 SW 436). Published 1:2500 surveys revised. (4)
The barrows fall within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. They have been included on the survey maps, but are covered by trees, and no further information could be added from aerial photographic evidence. (5) |
