Summary : Earthwork remains of a Medieval moat at Daffodil Wood. Field investigations in 1975 found it to be dry but in good condition. A retaining bank was found outside the southern arm. A homestead moat now practically dry but in good condition, correctly shown on O.S. 6". Under pasture but there are a few trees on the island. The material from the moat appears to have been piled up on the island which is higher than the natural ground level. There is a retaining bank outside the southern arm and another bank outside the northern arm. The tenant of Chartley Lodge Farm states that this feature used to be known locally as the "Lions' Den" and was believed to have housed the menagerie of Chartley Castle. (3)
