Summary : Canal attributed to Romans, obstructed circa 1086, re-opened 1121. Still in use for commercial and pleasure craft. No evidence of original Roman work.
More information : The Fossdyke unites Brayford Pool at Lincoln to the Trent at Torksey and is attributed to the Romans.
It was obstructed at, or shortly after, Domesday (1086) and re-opened for traffic in 1121. It remained Lincoln's chief commercial highway until the advent of the railways. (1-2)

Foss Dyke - Roman Canal. (3)

Fossdyke Navigation, now administered by British Waterways, has a five foot draught from the River Trent to Boston and carries daily canal barge and pleasure traffic.
Dredging and bank clearing takes place continually and there is no evidence of original Roman work. (4)
