Badger Hole

Hob Uid: 41540
Location :
Lancashire
Lancaster
Warton
Grid Ref : SD4818072850
Summary : A small cave situated on Barrow Scout, about 300 yards south west of Dog Holes Cave (SD 47 SE 2). Excavations in the late 19th or early 20th century by Jackson uncovered a collection of animal bones, plus some charcoal. The only possible artefacts were a fragment of "an apparent bone handle" and a piece of worked antler. A Roman date has been suggested, but this seems to rely solely on evidence for Romano-British use of other caves in the vicinity. Scheduled.
More information : Badger Hole is a small cave situated on Barrow Scout
(centred SD 482729) about 300 yds south west of Dog Holes (SD 47 SE
2) 25ft from the cliff top and 50ft above the road. The entrance, on
the cliff face is only accessible by a narrow path from the cliff
top. Excavation by Jackson uncovered numerous domestic and wild
animal bones, and evidence of fire in the form of charcoal and burnt
bones was found at a depth of 3ft in one corner of the cave. The only
other indication of human occupation was a fragment of an apparent
bone knife handle and a worked deer tine. (The two other Warton caves,Dog Holes and Fairy Hole (SD 47 SE 6) produced evidence of
Romano-British occupation and Badger Hole probably dates from that
period). (1)
