Summary : Original causeway south of Wall Bowers Milecastle 51 was excavated in 1937. A gap is visible in the turf wall and vallum at this location, which corresponds with a probable trackway extending to the south-east, though it is uncertain whether this is the causeway or a result of the excavations. |
More information : Original causeway south of milecastle (NY 5965/5) excavated 1937 (1a). Gap still visible. (1)
A trackway possibly associated with the casuseway can be seen as an earthwork on aerial photographs.(2)
The gap through the turf wall and vallum is visible on air photographs and digital elevation models derived from Environment Agency lidar and Structure from Motion taken from 2017 specialist oblique photography. This feature is however not sited centrally on the southern entrace to Milecastle 51 (12630). Two shallow banks extend along the length of the gap, either truncating or acting as a boundary to post medieval narrow ridge and furrow. This feature appears to continue to the south-east as a shallow escarpment, possibly as a trackway/hollow way. It is most likely that this gap is either a post medieval trackway, a field boundary or the result of the excavations. It is not likely to be the remnants of the causeway. (4) |
