Hob Uid: 1100623
Location :
Greater London Authority
Tower Hamlets
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TQ3371280628
Summary : Brass Mount at the Tower of London occupies the north-eastern corner of the outer curtain wall. It is a semi-circular bastion of the late 13th century or early 14th century with mural gallery in original brick containing 11 embrasures. In 1597 the core of the bastion was infilled with earth to cushion cannon shot and paved over to provide a platform for mounting guns. In the 1850s a spiral staircase and passage were inserted in the infill to provide access into the ground floor gallery from the roof platform. The War Office reconstructed the rear wall in 1908 and in 1914 converted the bastion to a store to house 41,000 rifles previously housed on the ground floor. This was achieved by removing the earth fill to allow for the creation of three floors.
