Location :

Grid Ref : SE5616043517
Summary : Site of hall and moat, probably the site of a grange of St Mary's Abbey, York. Only the North-East angle of the moat survives.
More information : [SE 5615 4355] WOOLAS HALL [G.T.] (Site of) (1)

The moated site of Woolas Hall. (2)

Surveyed at 1/2500. A large irregular shaped moat, now dry, and extensively mutilated on its western and southern sides by modern drainage ditches. There are no visible remains of Woolas Hall. (3)

Condition unchanged apart from minor amendments; published survey (25") revised. (4)

SE 561435. Woolas Hall (Woolhouse on Jeffery's map of 1772). Probably site of Grange of St. Mary's Abbey, York, in spite of 'Grange Farm' (Woolas Grange - SE 551 431) 1/2 mile to the southwest.Grant of land to St. Marys Abbey included mill. Woolas Hall is on a good stream, but none near Grange farm, Moats fed by stream from the North. (5)

Only the NE angle of the moat, which has been refilled with water, now survives intact. The west side has been utilised as a channel for The Foss and The Fleet streams and the existing channel appears to be modern scarping and none of the original feature is evident. The SE facing arm and the central north-south arm have also been destroyed by infill and landscaping and modern farm usage. There is no trace of the hall. (6)

The northern arm of the moat shows up clearly on vertical photography of 1946. The remainder is as described in (6). (7)
