Full description

In 1319, Isabella de Beaupre (the Beaupres held Penhallam from the Champernownes in the C14) obtained licence to say mass in her oratory at Penhalym (b2, b6). The excavations at Penhallam revealed remains of the chapel. It lay on the south side of the courtyard, and was a rectangular building, 34ft by 14.5ft (10m by 14m), orientated east-west. There were stone benches around the north, south and west walls; a stone step marked off the sanctuary, where the remains of an altar 66in by 30in (1.7m by 0.76m) stood. A piece of plate tracery (cut in greenstone) from the east window was found, and part of the pointed head of a lancet window from the north wall. These fragments would be consistent with a C13 date (b6). Part, at least, of the east wall of the chapel had been covered in painted wall plaster (b6). A C13 date is suggested for this, too.
