The C13 and early C14 moated manor house at Penhallam consisted of a series of buildings arranged around a square courtyard. The buildings, some of whose wall still stand up to 1.5m high and were constructed of local slate rubble, with greenstone quoins, door jambs and windows. The roofs were all slated (b6, 102) and had lead guttering in places. No window glass was found during excavations - the windows must all have had wooden shutters (b6, 120-121). The complex was approached via a draw-bridge (later a fixed timber bridge) across the moat, on the south-side. The hall was on the north side of the courtyard. A wardrobe with chamber lay to its east and to its west, various service rooms - buttery, servery (and well), bake- and brew- house. South of these, on the west side of the courtyard, were the kitchen and pantry, and on the south west a larder and first floor lodgings, perhaps for the lord's retinue. The chapel lay on the south side, just to the east of the entrance (b6, 106- 124). Various features, cut into natural, were located. Some post holes were interpreted as supports for seats and/or shelving. Pits in the bake- and brew-house may have been to provide clay for lining the ovens (b6, 125-6; 112). The approximate date of abandonment of the site was indicated by two jettons, minted c1360, which were found under a fall of slates from the house roof (b6, 97, 126).
