Full description

A prison at Trematon Castle is mentioned twice, in 1540 and 1600. Leland, in 1540 found that "great peaces (of the castle) yet stond and especially the dungeon. The ruines now serve for a prison". In 1600, Carew found only ruined buildings within the bailey "and a poor dwelling for the keeper of the gaol".
