Borlase refers to a Bronze Age hoard found in 1744 near the summit of Carn Brea, west of the monument. He depicts two socketed axes from the hoard in a full scale engraving (b1). Mercer describes the axes as of "Armorican" type, small with square-section socket mouths and cast ribs, with very high lead content (b2,3). Both are now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
