Full description

A monument to Francis Lord de Dunstanville and Basset, of Tehidy, was begun in 1836 (b1) and completed the following year (b2). The structure, resembling a chimney stack with a cross at its top, is 27m high and has an entrance on the south side (b4, 5). Inside the granite tower, a wooden staircase originally gave access to apertures at the top giving wide views (b2, 3). Sections of the stairway survived to the 1950s but decayed and have been removed (b5). The monument stands on the highest point of the hill, within the enclosed area of the prehistoric hillfort (18163.41).
