Full description

Child, P., 2002, Countryside Stewardship: East Ash Farm, Frithelstock (Correspondence). SDV366532.

A typical Devon linhay, an open fronted cattle shelter with a hayloft above but with some unusual features. It is of four bays and is unusual in that the central post is of stone with buff brick dressings whereas the other two posts are of timber. The roof is now clad with corrugated iron; the 1988 Listing description describes the roof as being of Welsh slate. According to the owner, the roof trusses bear the date of 1906 and, stylistically, the building could be of this date (despite the 18th century attribution in the Listing description). It has another unusual feature, which as much to its interest as a vernacular building which is the woven straw floor which survives over most of the floored section of the building. Most of the walling is now stone but there is some cob in the rear wall. Possibly the building incorporates an older structure.

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

Rectangular building on the south side of the lane. It is end on to the road, with a yard in front (east).
