Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1969, OS/69099, NMR OS/69099 363-362 09-APR-1969 (Aerial Photograph). SDV349073.

Cropmarks are visible, probably forming over the levelled and spread remains of former field boundary banks enclosing a small stand of trees, or copse.

Ordnance Survey, 1992, OS/92243, NMR OS/92243 151-152 07-JUL-1992 (Aerial Photograph). SDV349088.

The cropmarks cannot be seen.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of 1969, centred on circa SS 43082604, circa 350 metres to the south of Higher Winsford Farm, are probably evidence of a former small field enclosure boundary bank or copse boundary, of probable post-medieval or modern date. Similar cropmarks are visible immediately to the south and east, adjacent to former field bouandries at circa SS42922603 and SS43052595, created by the removal of trees and probably boundary bank earthworks from small copses since 1946. Both were depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map and still extant in 1946. The cropmark recorded here is adjacent to a cropmark of a field boundary. A boundary is depicted on the Tithe map for Bideford of 1839 but had passed out of use by the publication of the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map in the 1880s or 1890s. The cropmark may therefore have been a similar copse removed prior to 1839.
