HER Number:MDV102391
Name:Possible quarry pit west of Clovelly

Summary

An irregular pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs dating to 1953. It may have been the source of material for a former field boundary, and therefore possibly of post-medieval or medieval date. Examination of Lidar-derived images suggests that earthwork remains are likely to survive.

An irregular pit, 20 metres by 8 metres, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs dating to 1953. It is almost straight sided on the south, where there is a patch of rougher vegetation, perhaps indicating disturbed ground. The pit is hard to distinguish on images using Lidar data captured in 2007, but the around of rougher ground is clearly visible. The pit may have been created during the extraction of materials for building, and the straight south side could suggest that it was once defined by a boundary. Perhaps the pit was itself a source of building material for a medieval or post-medieval bank or wall. However no field boundary is visible here on the 1840 Tithe map, and the pit may therefore pre-date the mid nineteenth century.
