HER Number:MDV102426
Name:Hollow ways north-east of Clovelly Dykes

Summary

Two parallel linear ditches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs between the 1940s and 2007. They are interpreted as hollow ways used to access water and may be medieval or post-medieval in date. One was still in use in the late nineteenth century, and at least one more may also survive to the north as an earthwork.

Two parallel linear ditched features, between 3.5 to 4.5 metres in width, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs between the 1940s and 2007. Two hollow ways are depicted on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping, the more southern of which corresponds to the location of the northernmost earthwork. Several roadside buildings are depicted on the 1840 Tithe map, and the earthworks are likely to be routeways linking house plots to a small irregularly shaped land parcel approximately 100 metres to the north-east. The late nineteenth century mapping marks a well at this location suggesting that the routes were used to access a watersource, and presumably became hollow ways over time and through continued use. Settlement at 'Westdich' is recorded from the fourteenth century, and the hollow ways may therefore originate in the post-medieval or even the medieval period. At least three can be demonstrated, suggesting that each house plot may have had separate access, or that several consecutive hollow ways were established; one of those visible on aerial photographs presumably went out of use before the mid nineteenth century, whilst the other two were still in use in the late nineteenth century. All three may survive as earthworks.
