DBA undertaken along a corridor associated with the A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. This study is intended to inform the development of options for improvements to the A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.

Former cider house converted to cattle stalls in 20th century.

Visited 5th July 2002 by John Thorp. Lofted, gable ended building built down the hillslope facing west onto yard, with south end onto gateway into yard. North end was cider house and south end a cellar. North end converted to cattle stalls in 20th century. Currently disused, in fair condtion.
Rubble stone walls with brick dressings under slate-covered 3 bay roof of A-frames with straight lap jointed collars fixed each side by a bolt and nail. At apex, principals jointed by a notched, mortise and tenon, nailed togther, and with plate yoke. Ridgeboard and single set of purlins resting on back of principals.
9.24 metres by 5.6 metres by 3.5 metres high to eaves. Original symmetrical front. Now, central window flanked by doorways, but originally, central doorway flanked by windows. Original apple loft loading hatch in centre. Present arrangement from circa 1960-70 when southern end converted to dairy with front and south end sliding doorways. Construction of dairy involved removal of first floor and raising ground floor level. Also, a hole punched through wall (low and north of central window) for vacuum pump from adjacent milking parlour. All ground floor doorways are 20th century creations. In west front original doorway converted to window (flat arch of stone voussoirs with internal brick segmented arch). Window each side converted to doorways in 20th century. First floor loading hatch original with symmetrical front. South end has circa 1960-70 sliding door to dairy. First floor loading hatch original with brick jambs and contains plain frame and plank door. Two original ground floor windows converted to doorways in 20th century (head of northern one same as central doorway ). Central doorway converted to window containing circa 1960-1970, iron framed tilting casement. Loft has narrow brick lined ventilator slit in north end.
Surviving first floor hayloft carried on upended plank cross joists resting front and back on timbers along inside of wall and supported on stone corbels. Concrete stalls.
