Summary

NMR, SX9399 1 & SX9499, 1-2,7,11-12,26-27,34-35,45-51,73-76,79,82. (Aerial Photograph). SDV119919.

Recorded as cropmark in 1984. Ring ditch cropmark c60m diameter. Within & slightly to east is another possibly small round barrow site, also visible as a ring ditch c10m diameter (citing Miller).

Large, very regular, circular ditch, possibly having two entrances, shown as cropmark on air photo. Suggestion of more marks to the south. Diameter 100m. The CUC photograph BTS 81 taken circa 1975-1976, shows a circular central feature to this ring ditch which does not show in the earlier MH63 & TK94. This increases the likelihood that this is a ritual site of some sort.

A cropmark of a ring ditch c60m diameter with a 2.5m wide ditch was surveyed in 1990 to the southwest of Rewe Barton. Other features were noted but were possibly of natural origin. Other details: Field survey plan & photos.

A large ring ditch or ditch defined circular enclosure of probable later prehistoric date
was visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark on the gentle west facing slopes of the Exe Valley, west of Rewe Barton. The cropmark is on average around 2 metres wide and encloses a roughly circular area approximately 55 metres in diameter. The possible internal circular feature identified by the above authority from a CUCAP image of 1975-1976 (BTS 81) was also clearly visible on Historic England images of 1984, slightly off centre at circa SX943993. This cropmark was circa 1.5 metres wide and enclosed an area circa 7 metres in diameter. The two ring ditches are interpreted as being probably associated but it must be considered possible they were of different dates.
No breaks in the cropmark confidently interpreted as entrances were visible which might support the interpretation that the monument had a ceremonial function.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs or CUCAP images held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
