Swete, having crossed over the mill leat after Bridford Bridge states that he 'had a fine view of the Wear which diverted this Water stream from the Rivers bed'. He describes the weir, seen at a time of low water levels, as 'a long ledge of huge rounded Stones, piled irregularly on one another'.
