Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map appears to show the leat coming off the River Erme downstream of its current position. While this could be due to differences in cartographic representation and accuracy it is also possible that the leat was extended subsequently and a new weir constructed in order to obtain a greater head of water at Stowford Mill. If this is the case then such works are likely to have taken place during John Allen's redevelopment of the mill in the 1850s and 60s. The papermill, leat and weir together, therefore, are important monuments associated with the forefront of paper producing technology as it stood in the mid 19th century.
