HER Number:MDV103179
Name:Probable Quarry North-East of Oxenpark Farm

Summary

An irregularly shaped pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1947 and as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 2007. Similar to others in the vicinity, it may have been the source of materials for construction of the nearby medieval field boundaries, and probably went out of use before the late nineteenth century. Earthworks may survive.

An irregularly shaped pit is visible as earthworks of 60 by 15 metres in size on aerial photographs from 1946 and as a dark cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 2007. It is similar in form to nearby extraction pits, including one marked as an ‘Old Quarry’ on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map (MDV66913). It may have been the source of materials for construction of the nearby field boundaries, many of which are characterised as medieval or post-medieval in origin. As it is not depicted on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping it probably fell out of use before the late nineteenth century. However, below-ground remains are likely to survive, and the dark cropmark may have formed in an earthwork hollow.
