HER Number:MDV103338
Name:Rectilinear enclosure west of Oxford Cross

Summary

A possible rectilinear enclosure of probable later prehistoric or Roman date is visible as cropmarks of a bank and ditch on aerial photographs taken in 1993 and 2001 and as subtle earthwork banks on images derived from lidar data. A possible annexe has been identified to the south-east.

Full description

Geonex UK, 1993, 78/93, DCC Geonex 78/93 045-046 08-JUN-1993 (Aerial Photograph). SDV349900.

A possible rectilinear enclosure is visible as a pale cropmark possibly formed over a bank.

Next Perspectives, 2001, Next Perspectives PGA Tile Ref: (Aerial Photograph). SDV349376.

A dark but indistinct cropmark ditch is visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A possible rectilinear enclosure is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 1993 and 2001. The pale cropmark on the 1993 photograph may have formed over a bank, but is at too large a scale to be certain of its form, while the dark cropmark that is only just visible on aerial photographs taken in 2001 may have formed over a ditch circa 3 metres in width. The maximum visible dimensions are 45 by 60 metres, and the shape and size of the cropmark is consistent with an interpretation of the underlying feature as the remains of a later prehistoric or Roman enclosed settlement. However interpretation is necessarily tentative and more work would be required to ascertain the date and character of this possible archeological site.

University of Exeter, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Unlocking Landscapes Project – validated data, ULDEV10 (Interpretation). SDV365999.

A sub-square enclosure defined by bank and ditch, measuring 45m x 52m is visible. The enclosure may have additional earthworks abutting the southern side, now partly obscured by present-day field boundary.

Environment Agency, 2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Lidar visualisation (Cartographic). SDV366001.

Linear banks up to 5m wide are visible defining a rectilinear enclosed area approximately 22m by 28m in size. An external ditch up to circa 6m wide is also visible as a subtle earthwork.

Hegarty, C., 2024, Comment on Unlocking Landscapes project interpretation (Personal Comment). SDV366085.

The lidar data might show a rectilinear annexe to the south-east of the main enclosure but these possible earthworks are very subtle and may simply represent modern agricultural marks. No clear entrance to the enclosure can be identified.
