Full description

Dalton, J. N., 1917, The Collegiate Church of Ottery St Mary, 73, Plan, Pl. XXV (Monograph). SDV102603.

Existed at beginning of 19th century, rooms over the archway for the morn-priest.

Rose-Troup, F., 1932 - 1933, Bishop Oldham and Ottery St Mary, 153 (Article in Serial). SDV336632.

Site of collegiate gatehouse. Erected c1688, replacing an older building, and still extant until late 18th century. A stone from it survives in the churchyard, this bearing the arms of Bishop Oldham (1505-19).

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1953, SY09NE8 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV336572.

No visible remains. Stone of Bishop Oldham relates to a rebuilding, and is now in churchyard gatepost, probably built in 14th century, restored early 16th century, rebuilt c1688 and demolished early 19th century.

Weddell, P. J., 1987, Devon Religious Houses Survey: Ottery St Mary, 10 (Report - Survey). SDV366679.

The college precinct or close was entered through a gatehouse to the south of the church. A drawing in Dalton (1917) suggests it was a two storey structure. An 18th century painting also reproduced by Dalton appears to show the remains of an arch at the east end of the college close on the south-west corner of the gatehouse.
