Full description

Dalton, J. N., 1917, The Collegiate Church of Ottery St Mary, 77 (Monograph). SDV102603.

The Warden's House is believed to incorporate remains of the medieval Warden's House of the College at Ottery St Mary. The 15th century chimney-piece from this building has now been removed to the vicarage (see PRN 19995).

Pevsner, N., 1952, The Buildings of England: South Devon (Monograph). SDV336217.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1953, SY09NE8 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV336572.

Externally the building presents no features of obvious antiquity. The cob walls are presumably coeval with the Collegiate Church.

Department of Environment, 1974, Ottery St Mary UD, 5 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV102862.

Fragment of the monastic buildings but reconstructed mainly in 18th century. 2 storey rough cast. House was once large with 2 wings facing south. Little of this remains.17th century fireplace and Adam style mantle etc survive. Early 13th century fireplace now in chanter's house (see PRN 10322).

Weddell, P. J., 1987, Devon Religious Houses Survey: Ottery St Mary, 13-14 (Report - Survey). SDV366679.

The Wardens House was once part of the Collegiate Church of Ottery St Mary. It is situated in the south-west corner of the college precinct, screened by the high perimeter wall. The original form of the house cannot be deduced as the house has undergone many changes. The present house is rectangular in plan, rendered on three sides with stonework visible on the south side. Internally it is 18th century and the windows on the south side are also of this period. The present north front is a later addition and the original north wall can be seen inside the house. The thick main outer walls may contain medieval fabric.
A particular architectural feature of the Warden’s House is a decorative fireplace dated to the 15th-early 16th century. It was moved to the Vicarage and is now in the Chanters House. Evidence of a chimney and fireplace observed during stripping of the external render on the west end wall suggests that the fireplace served a room to the west, no longer extant. If so, then the west wing of the house at lease was of late medieval date.
