Full description

Shippon and Cider House. Originally an apple loft; cider house; shippon. Later an apple loft; cider house. A long, gable -ended, lofted building which extends beyond the yard. Originally, it may have been a shippon, but the farmer refers to it as the cider house, and this could have been a later use. Chert; Limestone; Rubble stone, brick dressed walls. Roughly coursed limestone plinth with ashlar quoins. Chert and limestone rubble above with brick dressings. Roman tile roof. A-frame; Tie Beam Truss. 6 bay roof which is divided into two by a central tiebeam truss with a kingpost and raking struts. The east roof has two tie beam trusses, with raking struts supporting back purlins and raking struts supporting a short horizontal piece of timber at the apex, which holds the ridgeboard in place. The mid-20th century replacement roof at the west end has 2 bolted A-frame trusses with king planks, which are notched for a ridgeboard. The collars are bolted and lap-jointed. One set of staggered butt purlins. Door/s; Evidence for engine/machinery; Loading hatch; Timber window/s. The south front, facing the house, has a 2-flap ledge door with strap hinges at the east end, and a plank door on strap hinges to the west end, with two 20th century timber casements between, with internal splays. The east window is in the blocking of an original doorway. There appears to be a blocked loft hatch above the west window. The rear wall has an inserted, wide doorway without doors, at its centre, with a loft hatch above. To the right ( west) of the doorway there are two inserted, metal, top tilting casement windows, and to the left, a loft hatch, with plank doors and strap hinges and some infill of a larger doorway below. In the east gable end wall there is a small, splayed opening with a 20th century timber window, and in the west gable end there is an inserted doorway with an original ledge and brace door on strap hinges. There is a low hole between the two windows in the north wall, presumably for a drive shaft. Apple loft; Cobble floor. The loft floor of the 3 east bays is supported on upended joists on laces in the wall, and X braces. There is an inserted hatch in the loft floor. The lower end of the building was originally lofted, but this was destroyed in a fire. The joist holes are visible in the wall. This loft was lower than the upper loft. Collection. Collection of antique tractors. Currently an agricultural store. Stores antique tractors.
