Cider house. Apple loft; Cider house. The cider house was built at the south end of the farmhouse. It has an apple loft above, which is reached from an outside stone stair. Its roof is hipped to the south. It has a storage room to the rear, for cider barrels, from which Mrs Rowe remembers cider being sold. Chert; Limestone; Rubble stone walls. Limestone rubble with some chert. Slate roof. A-frame. 2 bays plus a hip. A-frame trusses with lap jointed X-apexes and a diagonal ridge. Lap- jointed collar held with a spike each end. 2 sets of back purlins. Original common rafters. Datestone/Plaque; External stairs; Loading hatch; Timber window/s. Two doors in south gable end. 2-flap, ledge and brace door in solid frame to cider house. Plank door to apple loft, in solid frame, up stone outside steps with secondary iron railings. To east, at loft level, a lunette window with 20th century replacement timber frame and glazing. Below, a replacement 20th century window in original opening with internal splay. To the west, at ground floor level, a window with timber shutters on strap hinges with round finials. There is a loading hatch above with a plank door held on strap hinges. To the left, towards the farmhouse, there is a glazed, 20th century replacement window. The datestone (1767) in the external wall of the cider house was removed from a gamekeeper's cottage and placed here during refurbishments to the farmhouse. Apple loft; Cobble floor; Stone drain. The apple loft is supported on 2 chamfered crossbeams and wide joists. In the southwest corner are two curving timber carriages which support the short stair from the outside loft door up to the loft floor. Complete and well-preserved cobble floor. A masonry partition wall divided the cider house from the rear storage room. The plank door through has a timber lock box and a solid, pegged frame. The rear room has a ceiling and a door through to the house, also with a timber lock box. Stone drain runs eastwards in cider house. There is a timber roller, operated by hand, which is suspended from the ceiling in the position where the cider press used to be. Its purpose is not clear. Currently used for domestic utility / storage.
