Summary

Shown as a row of three terraced buildings at the Tuly Street end of Gammon's Lane, now Gammon Walk, on the 1855-95 town map, No. 15 Tuly Street and Nos 8 and 9 Gammon's Lane were an interesting group of 19th century buildings distinguished by their eccentric architectural detailing. The site on the corner of Tuly Street and Gammon Walk has been completely rebuilt. The design of the new building and the use pale yellow brick with red brick detailing and dark red bricks at the bottom of the columns reflects that of the Gliddon and Squire warehouse on the opposite corner.

No. 15 Tuly Street together with Nos 8 and 9 Gammon Lane are an interesting group of 19th century buildings distinguished by their eccentric architectural detailing. No. 15, for example, has a gothic doorway to the rear of the building and a late medieval style timber screen between the entrance hall and the front room. No. 8 has 18th century style panelling in a similar position. These features do not appear to have been reused from earlier buildings put to have been purpose made for the houses.

Beacham, P., Nov 1983, Barnstaple Local Public Inquiry. Historic Buildings in Barnstaple Town Centre included in Redevelopment Proposals. Proof Evidence, Appendix B.2 (Report - non-specific). SDV354431.

Nos 8 and 9 Gammon Lane, which are partly comprised of No. 15 Tuly Street are dated to the mid-late 19th century. The house on the corner is the more distinguished house with some fine interior details.
