The quarries are depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s.

Two former quarries of modern date are visible as earthwork pits and banks on aerial photographs of 1942 onwards, to the northwest of Lower Kilngate. The two adjacent former quarries are visible as sub-oval earthwork pits with outer earthwork banks and both appear to be first depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. The western quarry measures approximately 12m in length and is visible as an earthwork pit and bank on aerial photographs up until 1960 and has been levelled by 1989. The eastern of the two quarries measures approximately 31m in length and remains visible as an earthwork pit and bank on digital images derived from Lidar data captured between 1998-2012.
