A possible clay extraction pit of probable modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Lower Nutwell. The earthwork pit is semi-circular in shape, measures approximately 62m in length and has been cut into northwest sloping ground up to and respecting a trackway which leads up to Nutwell Farm, as depicted on the 1880’s-90’s Ordnance Survey First Edition map. As such, the clay extraction pit likely post-dates construction of this trackway. The clay extraction pit remains visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs until 1969, although appears to have been completely infilled and levelled by 1979.
