The Bampton branch of the Royal British Legion was formed in 1923. Its first Honorary Secretary, Henry Jones, had served with the 1st Devonshires in The Great War and was discharged medically unfit. He was the custodian of the Drill Hall, Poor Rate collector, and assistant Overseer of the Poor. He had been a Colour Sergeant before the war, acting as Drill Instructor for the 3rd Battalion Volunteers at the hall.
