The area first shown as probably unenclosed land on a map of 1711 with a row of four cottages adjoining the road to the east. These cottages are shown on the Tithe Map of 1841, with the triangle of land to the west indicated as a garden plot. By the first edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1890 a long rectangular building had been built to the west of the cottages and, in the north-east corner of the traingle of land, a pair of outbuildings had been added. To the west, against a new north-south boundary was another small building. Comparison of the Tithe Map, early Ordnance Survey maps and what is on the ground now indicate the loss of part of the group of cottages some time in the 20th century. The long outbuilding to the west of the row had also been demolished.
Walls, S., 2011, Erection of a Bungalow with Garage and Access (Report - Watching Brief). SDV348706.
Watching brief undertaken on groundworks associated with the construction of a bungalow within a triangular piece of land to the rear and south-west of The Old Smithy. A previous desktop assessment had shown that The Old Smithy shown on an estate map of 1711 formed part of a row of cottages. The southernmost cottage was demolished after 1908 but before 1947 and the access road for the proposed development passed through the footprint of this cottage. In addition other 19th century structures also formerly stood behind the cottages.
Three linear features exposed in the area of the proposed bungalow are interpreted as post medieval field drains; a single sherd of post medieval North Devon ware was recovered from one of the features.
In the area of the site access and garage another linear feature was exposed running east-west from the eastern limit of the excavation which may have been a foundation trench. Its fill was of 19th-20th century date. The western limit of the cut was defined by a cobbled surface(s). This extended westwards to the remnant of a hedgebank which suggests that this boundary together with the cobbles probably relates to the garden/yard of the cottage that was demolished. The cobbles were similar to those fronting the surviving cottages to the north. With the exception of the sherd of post medieval North Devon ware mentioned above, all finds were recovered from the topsoil and included a range of medieval and post medieval ceramics.
