An oval enclosure of probable late prehistoric or Roman date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s onwards as low earthwork banks on the slopes of a north-east facing combe slope overlooking the River Clyst. The western extent of the enclosure corresponds with a slight dog-leg in the course of a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Clyst Hidon. This might support the interpretation that the field boundary was respecting or taking advantage of an extant earthwork. The banks remain visible as low earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010.
