Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the early-mid 19th century, although it may be earlier. Documentary references for Stidston date back as far as the early 14th century. Depicted on the early-mid 19th century Tithe Map, the layout of the farm is largely unchanged from the late 19th century.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848, 89-90/160 on apportionment scanned document (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Stidstone is depicted on the Tithe Map: 3764 on the South Brent apportionment ('dwelling house, other buildings and yard'). Homestead comprises an L-shaped farmhouse creating the south-eastern corner of a range of buildings surrounding a yard on four sides. A further building lies to the south, bordering a further yard with mow plot and gardens to the east of the farm.

Late 19th century historic map shows some changes to the layout of the farm. The range of buildings on the north-western side has been combined with structures on the west and no building remains on the north-east. The building to the south is also gone.

The modern map shows the layout of the farm to have changed little since the late 19th century, although the farm buildings to the north-west of the farmhouse have now been at least partly converted to dwellings.

Vinnels, L., 2024, Robin Cottage, South Brent, Devon. Results of archaeological monitoring and recording, 2-3 (Report - Watching Brief). SDV365846.

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out in November 2023 during the hand removal of the modern floor surfaces during conversions to an outbuilding at Robin Cottage. Cobbled surfaces were exposed in the two rooms monitored. It is probable that these three rooms would originally have been used as pigsties, containing cobbled floors and chutes for feeding, which were noted during the recording. No finds were recovered during the monitoring of the groundworks.
