Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
Homestead is depicted on the Tithe Map; 768 on the Buckland Monachorum apportionment ('House and court'). The homestead consists of a small square dwelling on the south-western side of the farm, with one rectangular agricultural building to the north-east. There is an orchard to the east. This homestead is recorded as part of 'Horrabeer' farm which lies just to the south-east.
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
The late 19th century map shows the farms layout to have been completely changed from the Tithe Map depiction. There has been a new farmhouse constructed within the orchard area and an L-shaped range of buildings are located to the west. This depiction fits with the 2014 owner's note that the farmhouse was built in 1857.
Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 225 (Monograph). SDV1312.
Harrowbeer is 'Baraberga' in 1096, 'Harebere' in 1546, 'Herrabere' in 1591, 'Harrabeare' in 1624. The 'b' in the earliest form may have been a clerical error for 'h', in which case the first element may be the Old English 'hara', meaning hare.
Richards, A. F., 2014, Harrowbeer farmhouse, Yelverton (Personal Comment). SDV357471.
According to the current owner, the farmhouse was built in 1857.
Ordnance Survey, 2014, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV355681.
The modern map shows the farmhouse has been divided into two dwellings and there is no sign of the L-shaped range of farm buildings (house shown in this area is modern). Considerable extensions have been added to the south-western side of the farmhouse.
