The extractive pit is symbolised as a possible pond on the Sampford Peverell parish tithe map of approximately 1838-48.

An extractive pit of probable post-medieval to modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the southeast of Lower Town. The oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 44m in length by 36m in width and is positioned alongside an extant field boundary on its eastern edge. It is first symbolised as a possible pond on the Sampford Peverell parish tithe map of approximately 1838-48 and remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from Lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010.
