The remains of probable post-medieval to 19th century date banks made for tree planting and drainage were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2012 as earthworks to the south of Thatcher’s Lane, Thorverton.
Their alignment is cross-contour and they are interpreted as fruit tree planting banks of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that were probably made to enhance drainage within an orchard, draining into the stream to the west.
The banks coincide with an orchard depicted on the on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map but all tree planting has been cleared on aerial photographs of 1946, on which the banks are clearly discernible. The earthwork banks were less clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2012, but a number do appear to survive as low earthwork banks.
