Former field boundaries were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as linear earthwork banks and slight ditches on the east bank of the River Exe, to the north of Netherexe Barton. The boundaries are not depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map. However, they either correspond with schematically depicted rows of tree planting, probably indicative of former boundaries, or fall within the former field pattern outlined by the former boundaries. The curvilinear relict banks are therefore probably evidence of former field boundaries potentially of medieval date which had been removed prior to the 1880s. The earthworks have probably been largely levelled, with the exception of a north-south boundary which is visible as a very slight earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data. Linear and curvilinear pale cropmarks visible extending to the north and west in an L-shape on the DCC HER digital mosaic of aerial photographs of 2006 to 2007, could be interpreted as further evidence of additional removed field boundaries, but these correspond with earthwork hollows or channels that appear natural in origin on the 1940s aerial photographs.
