The remains of a former field boundary of probable medieval origin was visible as an earthwork ditch to the north-west of Madges Cross on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005. The earthwork ditch corresponds with a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Whimple. The boundary is not shown on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map, supporting the interpretation that it was removed at some point between the 1840s and 1880s. The boundary ditch is likely to survive as a low earthwork.
