The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and drainage improvement in an orchard of post-medieval period to 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s on a south-east facing slope to the south of Rull Farm, Whimple.
The banks measured approximately 7 metres wide and were aligned across the contours of the slope to drain into a stream.
The banks did not correspond with an orchard plot depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map which supports the interpretation that the orchard had passed out of use prior to the 1880s. The banks cannot be seen of digital images derived from lidar data of 2005 and 2010 and have probably been levelled. The field boundary that probably enclosed the orchard remained visible as a broad and shallow earthwork ditch to the north-east and south-west, and is recorded separately.
