The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in a small orchard of probable post-medieval to 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data as earthwork banks to the north-west of Churchill’s Farm, Broadclyst.
The ridges corresponded to an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map and its establishment therefore predates the 1880s. The orchard remained planted into the 1940s but was largely cleared by 1966, with only a light scattering of trees remaining and the tree planting banks clearly visible. It was completely cleared and possibly levelled by 2000.
