The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in a small orchard of probable post-medieval to 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs as earthwork banks at Higher Burrowton, Broadclyst.
The ridges fall within the area of an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map and its establishment therefore predates the 1880s. The orchard remained densely planted into the 1940s but had been thinned out by 1966. Only a handful of trees remained in 2000 but the banks remained visible as slight earthworks.
The tree planting banks were clearly visible on the western side of the former orchard on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005. This corresponds with an area enclosed by a field boundary on the Tithe Map for Broadclyst, which potentially defines the oldest part of the former orchard.
