The remains of possible field boundaries of post-medieval period to 19th century date were visible as earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s to the south of Rull Farm, Whimple. The former boundaries probably partly survive as shallow earthwork ditches.
The ditches divided a field on the south-east-facing slopes adjacent to Knowle House Cross into four, the south-east quadrant containing earthwork banks interpreted as evidence of a former orchard (recorded separately).
The ditches did not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Whimple which supports the interpretation that the boundaries had passed out of use prior to the 1840s.
The broadest, north-east to south-west aligned ditch can be seen on digital images derived from lidar data of 2005 and 2010, and some evidence of the former boundaries might therefore survive as earthworks.
