A possible quarry pit of medieval to post-medieval date, was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on a north-west facing slope to the west of Holway Farm, Whimple.
The pit is roughly triangular in shape and measures almost 50 metres across at the widest point. It does not correspond with any quarries depicted on the Tithe Map for Whimple, but a field boundary appears to respect the location of the pit, possibly supporting the interpretation that the boundaries had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The line of the field boundaries is also visible as earthwork ditches but have not been transcribed.
The pit is clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010 and probably survives as an earthwork.
