HER Number:MDV112554
Name:Orchard at Gookey Down

Summary

A possible former orchard of post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as the remains of ridges at Gookey Down, Broad Clyst, probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage. The ridges were not noted on images taken after 1967 and have probably been levelled.

A possible former orchard of post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as the remains of ridges at Gookey Down, Broad Clyst, probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage.
The ridges were approximately 5 to 7 metres wide and aligned roughly north-north-west to south-south-east on the slopes either side of a narrow stream. They do not correspond with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey second edition 25inch map. However, they do fall within a plot at a former farmstead at Gookey Down, possibly a former orchard. This settlement was abandoned by circa 1880.
This area of ridges was not noted on images taken in 2010 and has probably been levelled.
