An oval earthwork pit, possibly the remains of a former quarry of medieval to post-medieval date, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data on the north-facing slopes to the west of Hitt’s Farm, Broad Clyst.
The pit is over 40 metres long and 30 metres wide. It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and, if it is evidence for a quarry, it therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
A springhead is marked on the Ordnance Survey Mastermap digital base map immediately downslope of the pit. It must therefore be considered possible that the earthwork was, potentially in part, formed by this natural process.
