Summary

An orchard of possible post-medieval origin was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards at Venn Cross, Whimple. A distinctive feature of the orchard was the remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting. The ridges probably survive as low earthwork banks.

An orchard of possible post-medieval origin was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards at Venn Cross, Whimple. A distinctive feature of the orchard was the remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting.
The visible ridges were circa 5 metres wide and orientated roughly north-west to south-east, across the contours of the slope. The banks corresponded to an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, that remained densely planted into the 1940s. The orchard retained a light scattering of trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2000, when the underlying tree planting ridges were visible surviving as low earthwork banks.
