A large shallow pit was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an earthwork to the west of Rutton Farm, Whimple.
The pit is irregularly shaped and measures up to circa 140 metres across at its widest point. The product of the pit is unknown but it was probably a quarry or extractive pit of medieval to post-medieval date. The scale of the pit might support the interpretation that the pit was exploiting a widespread resource, such as clay, perhaps for use in brickworks or similar industry.
It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and it therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s. The pit falls largely within plot 77 on the Tithe Map for Whimple, which is listed as pasture called Pit Close, supporting the interpretation that the pit had closed some time prior to circa 1840.
