Summary

This appears to be one of the DCP stones, probably dates to after 1867 when the enlarged bounds of the prison were marked by a collection of stones inscribed in this manner to signify 'Directors of Convict Prisons'. (17/07/1995) SX58277379 An inscribed boundary stone is located at the foot of a wall marking the western edge of Prison farm 600m SE of North Hessary Tor.
The dressed granite post is square in section with a low pointed top and measures 0.23m wide by 0.35m high. The letters DCP 0.1m high appear above an arrow on the west face. Brewer (1986) concludes that the letters refer to 'Directors of Convict Prisons' a predecessor of the current 'Home Office Prisons' though he gives no dates.

(Not entirely clear whether this is the stone Brewer refers to, but it seems likely).
Erected after 1867 when the enlarged bounds of the prison were marked with 'DCP' stones. Inscribed 'DCP'. Marked on plan but not mentioned / photographed individually.
